Geocaching
Geocaching is an outdoor activity where people use a Global Positioning System to hide and seek containers anywhere in the world. Normally, cache is a waterproof container with a logbook. As of last February of 2010 there are over 984,900 active geocaches over the world. Geocaching is often referred to as a high-tech treasure hunting game equipped with GPS devices. Most after finding the hidden containers, share their experiences online.
Groundspeak has an application compatible with the iPhone Application specifically designed for geocaching. The iPhone 3G uses a combination of GPS, Wi-Fi positioning and cell towers to determine approximate location. Groundspeak’s application then queries to the Geocaching.com database in real-time and provides a list of geocaches near you. The owner may also filter his/her hides and finds from Geocaching.com, access recent logs, and download active pocket queries for use while outside of coverage.
The popularity of this hobby is growing stronger even with youth and families. The Geomate Jr. is a family oriented geocaching device. This device is a quick and easy way to get in to the geocaching fun. The Geomate comes with about 250,000 preloaded geocache locations in all 50 U.S. states. Since this is a simple product, there are no downloads, internet connection or typing coordinates necessary.
Memberships to geocaching are easy at www.geocaching.com. With a membership you can become a part of a large community of people who are geocaching everyday. The website also provides up to date material regarding the latest news and products for GPS geocaching. In association with Magellan GPS geocachers are hosting a clean-up called Cache in Trash out, an ongoing environmental initiative supported by the worldwide geocaching community. Geocachers clean up parks and other cache-friendly places around the world. The website also creates trackable items. By simply entering a tracking number one can place an item for trace after hiding or after having found the item. |
